The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to mandate vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology for new light vehicles in the United States. The road map that the NPRM set is clear – 100% of all new cars will have Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) technology installed by 2023, increasing from 75% in 2022 and 50% in 2021.
NTHSA stated that V2V/V2I could eliminate or reduce the severity of up to 80 percent of non-impaired-driving crashes.
Using DSRC based technology, vehicles exchange information between one another in a radius of up to1 mile. These data communications occur in a 75 MHz band of the 5.9 GHz spectrum, which has been allocated by the US Government for use by vehicle safety and mobility applications. Secure messages are exchanged up to 10 times per second between the vehicles which contains information such as location, heading, speed, acceleration and braking. The information is processed to determine collision threats and a warning is issued to get drivers to take appropriate action in order to avoid an imminent crash.
